Newborns:  It is best to shoot newborns in the first two weeks after birth. Infant sessions usually take longer to accommodate for feedings and changes.  Because of this, it is best that you try to have your newborn well rested and fed before the shoot.

Clothing: There is no need to bring a bunch of fancy clothes for your newborn. The skin they are born in is all you need and will provide the best photographs.  Mom and/or dad, holding the baby usually works well. It is best if both parents wear long sleeve black shirts for these shots.  Skin on skin with mom and dad make beautiful images as well. Simple works best for the newest of babies. Please be sure to bring simple, solid-colored diaper covers for your newborn.

Props: For newborns, props are minimal. Colorful flowers, stuffed animals, rubber ducks, etc. are available. Special toys and blankets make for good props. Please be sure to bring solid colored blankets that will enhance the portrait. For example, if you are announcing a baby girl, a pink blanket would be ideal.

Infant/Toddlers:  Young children tend to do better with outdoor photo shoots. I enjoy capturing children in their natural form; at play or observing nature. I've found that kids tend to be most cooperative when they are in comfortable clothing with minimal clothing changes.

Clothing: Clothing should be chosen based on the style of session you are seeking.  Jeans, a bright top and bare feet are perfect for candid and outdoor sessions. Also, long sundresses and sandals make great spring/summer shots. Choose fun outfits and accessories (hats, tutu's, oversized accessories, etc.) for in-studio shots. Elaborate costumes always create priceless photos. Dresses, slacks and a button down shirt with a sweater or jacket give it a more formal look, and are also great for in-studio shoots. Classic clothes like white linen dresses, khakis and polo shirts give the portrait a timeless look.  It's best to avoid plaids, busy patterns or any large logos, as it detracts from the photographs focus, your child.  Solid colors are ideal.

Props:  In-studio back drops and props are available. However, it is best if you bring items that will best emphasize your child's individual interests. Also, all child photography sessions will include outdoor shots. Whether we travel to the park or beach, children tend to photograph best while having fun outside. I prefer to capture those special candid moments over the "Mall-Posed" type photos.

Family Photos:  The clothing you wear will greatly impact your images.  When dressing for the session it's best to avoid plaids, busy patterns or any large logos, it detracts from the photographs focus, you! The ideal clothing is plain, classic and comfortable. Solid colors work best as do long sleeve shirts. Jewelry should be minimal, it's best to avoid wearing watches. Family portraits should be simple and beautiful. Corresponding clothing usually helps achieve this. Simple, solid colors should always be used. White or black tops and jeans or khaki bottoms are most popular. For larger families, I strongly recommend black or white because it is very difficult to find the exact matching shades of other colors. Props are not generally used, unless the client chooses otherwise. Family photos are taken with nature as the backdrop; beach, park, lakes, etc.

Maternity:  What do I wear to a maternity photo shoot? Your own comfort level is the main key in deciding what type of maternity shoot you want to do. Vanity Studios will shoot expecting mothers fully clothed to artistic nude. Artistic nude photos are very tasteful and only imply nudity, without actually showing it. For example, we may just see the silhouette of a pregnant woman. Open loose shirts, belly revealing tanks and bra-like lingerie tops are all appropriate clothing ideas. Some opt to use special garments, such as a sheer material or scarves to drape across the belly. This creates a classic and beautiful portrait for you to memorialize this special time in your life with.

Swimsuit:  Always remember to wear loose clothing before a swimsuit session, or other skin revealing photo shoot. It is best to bring a variety of swimsuits and covers (wraps, skirts, tops) to choose from. Solid colored swimsuits work best and nude colored swimsuits will provide the sexiest images. Bring plenty of accessories, such as sunglasses, hats, shoes, and jewelry. Vanity Studios will also provide a variety of accessories, props, and covers. Please be sure to bring a towel and a hair brush in case you get wet during the shoot.

Engagement/Couple Photos:  Engagement and Couple photo shoot sessions are primarily done on location. The beach, park, gardens and other beautiful locations work best. It is up to you, but I have many wonderful locations where I frequently shoot. As with Family Photos, it is best to wear corresponding colors and keep distracting patterns and colors to a minimum. I have found that black or white tops with khaki or jean bottoms work best with these outdoor shoots. Feel free to bring multiple outfits and we can do clothing changes throughout the shoot. There is only one important prop for Engagement Photos and that is: The Engagement Ring! Ladies: Remember to wear the ring. I'm sure you will be wearing it anyway. Couples shoots do not require any props unless there is something you have in mind.
